Default Am i getting shafted from mechanic?

Hey guys, so after putting a new exhaust on my 81 d150 225v6 2wheel, I decided to take it in and get some carb work done.

Before I brought it in it didnt start, unless you put a little gas or carb cleaner in the throttle body. I was told that it could of been a sticky float.

So I brought it to the mechanic that worked on it years ago, I called ahead, he said they were slow. I told him I that i needed it by tuesday, he said no problem. I brought it there last weds night at about 3pm. I call friday to see how things are going and he says that yeah, there was a bunch of gunk in the carb and he had to clean it out, and he was ganna look more at it.

So i call monday about 3pm and he said that they should have it done by 6, i was like sweet arranged for a ride out there, he calls at 5:30 saying they never got the part, and I said what part? He said that the carb needed rebuilding. So i was like whatever okay. So i call today(tuesday) noonish and he said he doesnt know if they will get the part today, they are very hard to find. And its ganna be $195 after its all said and done.

I feel like I'm getting shafted when a new carb from autozone is only 160(140 after current sale) and I told him i needed i by tuesday. Should I contront him or does this seem normal?

Just to let you know this shop has done alot of work for us, replaced fuel pump in my s-10($600) worked ignition module on f-150(250) scraped computer for the dodge(110) and replaced the engine in my moms daewoo 2 times(2700x2). I am just feeling pissed at this whole situation and feel like I am getting taken advantage of and what Other advise before I talk to him.

also with 2 minites of googleing i found http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...me=Gp-Sorensen

Thanks

It probably also depends where they get the parts and most mechanics that i know of use better stuff than what you get at autozone, not saying auto zone is bad but the stuff is usually more expensive but it sounds wierd that the part they need is "hard to find"

So i finally got it back, still running like when I brought it in. It will now however start fine, but whenever I get it going it will putter, and when I slow down it sounds like its backfireing in the exhaust, should i take it somewhere else or is this okay?

have you done a tune-up? sparkplugs, cap, rotor, wires and timing. if its firing out the exhaust the timing is firering too late. it should be a simple repair. a garage should be abe to set the timing for you for dirt cheap if you don't have your own timing light.

Took it in and got it timed, the mechanic said it was 30degrees off center and it should of only been 8 degrees, however while driving it today it started to run like crap, and putter again, so I took it to a different shop and the guys looking at it right now, thanks

$195 for parts and labor doesn't sound too obscene. Sure the parts are $20 but you have to pay him to put them in.

you should still check your sparkplug. your sparkplug will tell you whats goining on with your engine. if you got crapped up sparkplug that could throw off the timing. the incorrect gap on a sparkplug could throw-off the timing.

it may be cheaper to buy the parts yourself and take them to the mechanic

I just got it back earlier from new mechanic, he said he couldnt believe that it was rebuilt an gave me papers to file for filing a complaint against old mechanic, he said that the carb wasnt rebuilt, he used duct tape instead of vacuum plugs, and it was terrible.

So the new mechanic(1 stop auto in GR, MI) tuned the carb, timed it for like $40 and rode with me while i drove it to make sure that I was happy with the performance. Best service I have ever recieved and will go there from now on, highly recommend. He also told me a few more things wrong that I didnt know and he told me how to fix them.

Do you take your own bacon and eggs to the restaurant and have them cook em for breakfast?
