I had to replace the parts inside of the steering coupler on my 91 Ram, I got the roll pin out and pryed with a screwdriver and finally got it off the steering gear. now that the parts are replaced, its time to put the coupler back on the shaft, but for the life of me I cant seem to get it back on the steering gear. What should I do, I read somewhere that I can unbolt the shaft up further near the firewall, theres a rubber/cloth seal and four bolts which are seized solid. Any ideas?

 

The rag joint is the place to break the steering shaft. If you have to use vise grips on the bolts to break them loose just replace the bolts and nuts. If you have the time be sure to apply penetrating fluid to all the bolts every day for a couple of days before trying to break them loose.

 

The last time I rebuilt mine (6 or 8 years ago) I replaced outer housing and put a grease fitting at the bottom of it.
I grease it every oil change, so for still good.

 

Ok. I've had that part soaking with oil for the past couple days, still cant get it, vise grips, or sockets wont break if off, I broke a wrench already, stubborn old thing.

 

Pay the neighbor kid $20 to hacksaw them off, $5 a bolt ain't bad
can even cut between the steel and rubber to make it easy. If you mess the rubber up much, just add a washer to keep the thickness.

 

Rag joints are cheep. Go to your parts store and get a new one with new bolts and cut the old bolts off through the rag joint.

 

Good ideas, but I cant find a replacement rag joint for my truck anywhere, the dealer says they dont carry them anymore.
