When I was 19, I ran headers, and the stock dual exhaust, with no mufflers, on my 95 Roadmaster. Inside the car was actually not bad, but outside, it was loud enough to make people wet their pants... Plus, by the time I was 21, I figured out it sounded like SH*T. Tossed some Spintech mufflers on it, and it sounds WAY, WAY better. It's still loud enough to be heard 1/2 mile away, at the stoplight when my dad takes off in it. I'm only 22 now.

There is a big difference between plain loud, and sounding good while it's loud.

Also, you don't need back pressure, that is a myth. What you do what however, is exhaust scavanging. meaning, when the exhaust is too short, like headers dumped, you lose this effect. You want the pipes to atleast be about 36", to take advantage of this. FYI, header collector diameter, and length can play a big role in the power output, and where it makes it's power.
I agree. Too much backpressure is way more harmful for power production than less. I am running longtube headers, X-pipe, Dynomax race bullets, and turned down at the axle on a cammed 1999 Camaro. Sounds like a cup car.

to quiet it down if you are looking to do it for a while you can do what i had to do when leaving for work a 2a.m. and all you do is take and get some stainless window screen and some steel wool and put3 peices of steel wool per side and wrap them loosely in side of the screen then stuff it in to the end of your pipe it is what i did on my 3in exhaust but maybe less for yours and that quiets her right down i mean a good bit any ways and i had straight pipes from the headers back now i have dual pipes and dual turbo mufflers makes her sound nice and dosnt **** people off............ lol... my 0.2$

Well, this winter has been terrible for snow plowing. I've only needed to plow 3 times, so we haven't gotten any complaints.

I will be using the truck for hauling grain and other farm work over the summer, and I'll drive the truck as a daily driver if my other truck breaks down. My friend totaled his Chevy Tahoe with dual flowmaster mufflers, so I'll be using those as soon as I get time to work on it. Hopefully it will be a little quieter because inside the cab is fine, but when you're standing behind the truck it sounds like the world is ending.

I've actually used the steel wool trick a few times with other trucks, but never for an extended period. At silver lake state park they randomly check vehicles for sound levels before they let you out onto the dunes. As soon as I pass inspection, I put the pedal to the floor and blow the wool out of the pipes. Works every time.

Back pressure is not needed and will NOT increase the preformance of your vehicle. I ran straight pipes, no muffler, out the back of a Suburban and it perfectly acceptable sound wise

Is it possible to burn the exhaust valves up with too little back pressure? I've heard of this happening from several different people as well.

If it were possible to burn the valves with too little back presuure..........then EVERY race car with the motor running would have burnt valves. Much of what is said about "back pressure" is myth and legend. When TF and F1 cars start adding back pressure then the rest of us should take note. Just my opinion

Suggestion - go to a muffler shop that does dual conversions on new trucks. They always have brand new single systems lying around that they have taken off. The newer trucks have 3" pipes and huge mufflers. My guy fitted a brand new 3" stainless steel single system with muffler to my 1992 truck for $100. Its quiet and the 3" system lets it breathe. Back pressure at idle is less than 1 psig and its 2.5 psig when I get on it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but thats more money than I wanna spend. I'm getting the mufflers off my friends Tahoe for free, along with a pair of chrome tips (it's gonna look really funny seeing those nice chrome tips on the rusted out piece of crap this truck is )

Heres a video of the truck in all it's glory...
