Default Brake Warning Light

My truck has a break warning light that stays on constantly.
When i brought the truck home the light was off and I noticed if i "pumped" the pedal it would stiffen up. The light would occasionaly come on when I stopped at lights but would go away before i got to the next light.
While driving to work I had to hit the breaks pretty hard to aviod the idiot infront of me and from then on the light has been a constant. Also the pedal will no longer get firm bu pumping, however the truck stops fine (for a truck of this year).

Any ideas what's wrong with it?

you could should check to see if your parkbrake is partialy engaged or see if the brake fluid is low.

Parking break isn't engaged. To be sure I engaged and released it, the light stayed on.

I'll recheck the fluid level.

if that fail you could try disconneting the abs control module behind the glove boxe.

You might want to check that the stem on the proportioning valve is in all the way as it should be. It may have stuck in the open position.

Hi,

If that brake light is on, and your know the parking brake is disengauged, the light is also there if theres a hydraulic inbalance in the braking system. Like everyone else said aboove, check the fluid and the prop. valve. How worn are the pads/shoes?

I definitely need new pads, probably new shoes as well.

my first 93 I had, the light stayed on for quite a while...
I finally got around to changing the breaks on the thing...
had three pieces in each box, and took four pieces off each wheel...
yep, the rotars were cut in two.
Once I changed em, the light stayed off until I used the parking break.

Another think you might want to try, from a voice over my shoulder;
engage the parking break and drive slowly in reverse 5-10 feet, stop (in park) and disengage the parking break. This should tighten up the "Self adjusting" breaks.

Engaging the P-Break and reversing didn't work. I don't think I have to worry about the light anymore though as my '88 was side swiped while parked infront of my house. Pretty sure the insurance company is going to write her off as "totaled". Thanks for you're help though.
