Default Gas tank and body work

I'm new to the forum and I just wanted to say what's up.I got an 86 d350 that's in ruff shape. It is rusted all up.My main question is i just want to know if I can use fiberglass to fix it after I've scraped all the rust off.Plus the gas tank has a hole in it and I want to fiberglass that as well and not just a small hole it looks like swiss cheese. How well would this work and has anybody else ever done this before?I don't have access to a welder and I am broke as I don't know what and I really want to get this truck up and going. It's not a 4x4 but that is what I plan on useing it for.I want the cheapest way possible to fix it.

Problem with the tank is it's full of rust inside too. You'll be changing fuel filters every 50 miles. Not to mention you really don't want gas dripping all over the place. A boneyard tank would be a much better{and safer} bet, and you could probably get one for the price of the fiberglass it'd take to patch the old one.

is the tank metal because all stock dodge gas tanks i have seen have been plastic. my current gas tank is plastic and it came out an 86 d150. i think fiberglass would work to seal up the gastank but make sure to scuff it up good with some 40,60 or 80 gritt sandpaper so that the fiberglass has something to bite into.

I've got 3/4 ton with a steel tank, but metal or plastic, the tank's junk. And full of trash. Fiberglass doesn't flex very well and even if he does get it to seal it's only a matter of time.

Even then, if you have to pull it to clean it out, why jack with patching it too? At least, $30 at a boneyard would be my preference anyhow.

if your going to replace it, it might be a wise idea to try finding a plastic tank so that you don't run into this problem again.

Check out www.autobody101.com .I am not sure if fiberglass will work after years to come. How bad is the rust? If rusted bad you will be better off with getting better parts,or cut it out and use replacement parts and weld it in.

Welding isn't an option.I need something that I can do and fiberglass is.The tank in my truck is metal and for some reason it rusted out on the top side.I've already got a ton of fiberglass and resin and I just wanted to know how long it would hold up.This is just going to be a trail truck.I'm only 14,15 next month,So money is an issue for me.i just want it to run.The inside of the tank looks really clean with almost no rust inside at all.

you can use fiberglass to fix the hole. just make sure you get rid of all the loose rust. my dad used fiberglass on his ford's rear gas tank and it has last 3 years and is still not leaking.

if you do it right it can last a long time. if you don't do the job right if will fall apart quick.
