Further inspection is necessary as we do not have enough information to diagnose your problem. You haven't told us wether you have a W or D so some of these things may not apply but here is a starting point. Have someone move the steering wheel back and forth slowly while you are under the truck to find out where the play is. Rag joint, steering box guts, loose blots that hold the steering box, rusted out frame, ball joints, idler arm, drag link, center link and tie rod ends are all suspects.

Yes you want to check everything before you adjust the screw. Make sure everything is good. If everything does check. If you have to adjust it no more than 1/4 turns at a time.

yes.
as you tighten up that inner bolt you should feel a decrease in the play.
don't go too far, or you'll find that the steering won't automatically recenter as you come out of a 90* turn. try to find that sweet spot with minimum play that will still recenter.

W150 is 4x4 and D150 is 2x4. Long or short bed doesn't matter in this case. The 150 designates a half ton.
