thought i might ask y'all
alright, i posted this on the ramcharger area but no luck with any response yet, thought i might ask you guys
im in the middle of a few traides and im gonna end up with a 92 ramcharger and i have a few questions
the guy said it needs a tune up, and the transmission shifts fine and drives good untill it get warm then it falls out of gear he didnt seem to know what that was all about, the body is in great shape too
now my questions are
how hard is it to swap in 3/4 ton axles of the same body style truck
? i have plans on putting in a 6bt cummins and want the axles to hold up
and what would cause the transmission to fall out of gear? and what kind of transmission is it?

A gas to diesel swap is going to be pretty rough, no matter what you do. Its not like swapping a big block for a small block. Its heavier, and I don't think the mounts will line up either, and of course your ignition and electronics will all be different. Is the tranny a 3 speed, or does it have overdrive?
putting the cummins in the ramcharger wont be a pice of cake but its doable. Ive got a 1st gen cummins in an 85 crew cab, I didnt do the swap but I could ask the guy I got it from for some pointers. I think the 1st gen automatics were 727s w/ an overdrive. The trans you have is probably a A518 dont think it will work. putting 3/4 ton rear ends in it wont be a problem. Let me know if I can help.
The first gen trucks had 727s and A500s with maybe a few A518's at the end. The first gen cummins had the A518 so yes the tranny will work wether it is an A518 or 727. An A500 is not heavy duty enough if that is what the truck has (probably not). There is a guy on pirate that swapped a cummins into his ramcharger. Also look on ramcharger central as I bet someone has done one over there. A dana 60 front axle and rear Dana 70/80 or GM 14 bolt would be good choices. You should probably get a heavier duty transfercase also.
put a cummins in a ram charger should not be too hard. the wiring for any deisel engine is quite simple. my dads friend installed a cummins in his 95 ford f150. i don't think you would have upgrade your axels but you should if you plan on taking it off-roading or putting bigger tires on it.
im not to worried about the swap, one of my good friends owns a diesel shop and he has a 1st gen dually ill steal parts off of, i just want to run it this summer as is with the 318 and tear it down this winter, ill have a tranny transfer case with that dually, i have a line on a dana 60 front and a 70 rear out of a 90 cummins, think it would bolt in or would i have to modify anything?
should bolt in (but you know how good old chrysler is) they like to change things. Thats maybe the one thing ive admired about GM you can swap just about anything.just check width between spring perches and spring length.
