Default Drip rail question

I have a 93 W250 and the drip rail over the windsheild has rotted to the point that most of it has fallen off. The odd thing is that the roof near the drip rail is still good, some surface rust but no holes or penetration to the inside of the cab. My question is, can I just eliminate the drip rail and weld a piece of "flat body steel" in its place?
Brad.

If there is no penetration through the roof, I would grind it flat, eliminate any rust, fill any imperfections and paint it. Most vehicles don't have drip rails over the windshield.
