318 Engine Swap
I'm going to look at a 318 to replace mine that just went out on my 86 w150 auto. My father and I have done a 318 to 440 swap on his 70 Charger but never a 4X4 truck swap. So my question is what is the easiest way/order of opperations to go about disconnecting everything to be able to unbolt the engine from the tranny. It's the whole tranny to transfercase with the skid plate deal that has us scratching our heads a bit.
The guy I talked to also said that the engine came out of a 4 speed and mine is an auto. Does Autozone/Advance rent a pilot bushing removal tool or is it better to get removed at a machine shop?

it should be simple since it is standard transmison. remove any wires going to the transmission and unbolt the transmission from the engine. you don't have to remove the transmission or anything. you might have to remove the rad or the waterpump so that you can pull the engine far enough forward. you are better off to pull the engine with all the wires attached and then swap them to the other engine.
I have the Haynes. I even have the factory service manual that I picked up at a swap meet. I was just looking for some tips from guys that have already done it to make things go smoother.
Wolfie, mine is an auto. The new 318 I'm putting in was from a standard. I already pulled off all the accessories from the motor yesterday to make removal easier.

Well we are back to trying to fix the current 318. The guy I was going to get the engine off of never got back to me and it was a 2 hour drive anyway so maybe this is a sign to try to fix this one.
After removing the timing chain case, the cam gear was definately shot. The nylon sheathing was crumbled in some spots and the chain was digging into the metal gear itself. The chain seemed to be ok but might now be too sloppy so that will probably be replaced also. The noise I heard when it broke down was most likely the chain slapping around inside the case because we turned the crank and camshaft by hand very slowly and it didn't bind up or anything so it's possible that they internals are ok.

i have a 1989 dodge d100 shortbox 2 wheel drive and i need to know if a 3.9 v6 stock and a 318 stock both tbi will swap with out changing much and do i need to change the fuel pump/gas tank. i already know that i need to have the wiring harness the computer and i know the a500 from the 3.9 will swap to the 318 no problem i guess i just need to know what i have to have or need in order to swap from 3.9 to 5.2 the 3.9 is a premagnum. thanx

oh i forgot to ask where i can get a 318 for pretty cheap. i don't need anything fancy preferably not something with a lot of oil leakage etc. this is a work truck that i want to put 31's on and keep using for a work truck. it's just the 3.9 is getting pretty worn out because its the original engine. thanx
in order to replace a 3.9 with a 318 you will need a motor mount extension plate for the drivers side. i don't think you would need a different computer or wiring harness for the 318 if you plan on keeping the TBI because i think they use the same size TBI.
