Default transmission fluid

What kind of transmission fluid should I use in a 1983 dodge truck with an auto tranny? Dipstick says dexron, parts house guy says atf plus 4. Which is better for the trans? Thanks.

Either one will work.

In my opinion. The question is cost. I personally see nothing to be gained by the additional cost of ATF-4. The newer Chrysler trannys especially the 4 speeds need the higher performance fluid. Do you waste money on high test gas?

Here is some info I found.

I just use Wal-Mart's finest Dexron in my '89. No problems so far.

Thanks. Is what I was thinking, but wasn't sure. Trans fluid has become more complicated since this truck was built. I'm all for keepin it cheap. To da wal mart I go.

Dexron III is the same right? And can that and ATF+4 be mixed? I have a little of both in the garage haha

None of the Dexron fluids are compatible with ATF+4 from what I have read. Both are usable in Gen 1 automatics but I would use one or the other. If anyone wants to change from one to the other you must drain the torque converter as it holds about half of your tranny fluid.
