Default Heard a "POP" from the front drive shaft

Last night I was installing the 4" suspension lift on the front. While we were manipulating the axle, I heard a pop noise come from the spot where the front drive shaft can extend and contract (under the rubber boot in the middle of the drive shaft), and now it's notched down a good 2 inches. It's still connected, but I'm trying to figure out what happened, and what needs to be done to fix it. Any ideas?

That's what it was!!!! I was tearing through the corn fields the other week, and some kernels must have got stuck in the boot, and heated up when I was wheelin' and it was like movie night in the big city! I was just missing butter and salt, and of course the movie....
