trans fluid and "o" ring
Truck is a 86 d150 with a 318. I changed the trans gasket and filter. I want to replace the "o" ring but not sure where it goes or how. I have not put fluid in it yet. How much does it need to tell if it will not leak? I got 2 bottles for now and it is atf. Will that work he said it is what calls for but the dipstick says atf plus or dexron 2. thanks
I am not sure what O-ring you are talking about (there are 7 in a torqueflite). Might you be talking about the one on the dip stick tube? Dexron II or III is recommended to give longevity of parts and the soft shifts the torqueflite is known for. Type F can be used but will give harsher shifts that are harder on clutches and bands. Racing torqueflites use type F. When I change fluid and filter I add 3 quarts of Dexron III, run the truck until warm and then check the fluid. It usually takes about one more pint to get it right. Remember that the add mark on the transmission dip stick is for one pint not a quart like the engine dip stick. An over filled transmission is just as bad if not worse than an under filled one.

Im getting ready to change my trans filter and pan gasket within the next couple of days. I read somewhere that you can only use ATF+4 in dodge transmissions, using any other type of fluid will damage the transmission. Now Im not sure what to believe?
"I read somewhere?" Where?
Believe your dip stick. The information I posted came from a Torqueflite rebuild manual that covers stock and race Torqueflites and agrees with my original owners manual and my dip stick.

Your confusion arises because we were talking about Torqueflite 3 speed transmissions not 4 speeds like you have. I believe your tranny came with ATF+3 but I am not positive. If I was you I would look up the technical service bulletin and follow what it says if it applies to your truck. If you are not sure if it applies I would print the bulletin and drop by the dealer to talk to them.

ATF+2, ATF+3, and ATF+4 are Chrysler products and are "synthetics" not the 90% mineral oil like the rest of us use. Regular ATF fluids and synthetics are not compatible with each other and should not be mixed. Remember that you change less than half of the fluid with a regular filter and fluid change.

what do you do when you don't know what is in it? Is the fluid i got going to work? The dipstick i have says atf plus or dexron2. It came with 2 dipsticks and not sure what it says. From what i can tell from the #'s on the pan it is a 87 trans and truck is a 86. Btw the old filter was very dirty/clogged.
