Engine Runs Rough when Cold
Hey, I have an 88' Ram with a 318 and TB injection. I have been having problems lately with starting, as well as some serious shuddering when I accelerate. This only seems to happen when it is cold, once it reaches operating temp, then everything is perfect. This is the odd part: My temp gauge on the dash always reads cold... even when the engine has been driving for hours it still reads no higher than the first bar. So I changed the thermostat thinking that it was over cooling the engine; nothing. Just recently I changed the coolant temp sensor, which is what sends the signal to the gauge, still no difference. So all said and done I have a new thermostat, new coolant sensor, and once the truck is warm, then everything is perfect. Anyone know what is going on? I dont THINK the air temp sensor would make a difference, because it usually only operates right when the engine starts. Any ideas would be great, thanks very much.
oh... I changed the one that bolts into the front of the intake manifold up by the water pump. It has 2 wires on it, and it was called the "coolant temp sensor " according to all of the parts suppliers. When you say there also one for the computer, do you mean the air temp sensor which screws into the side of the TB?
The 2 wire is for the computer. Look at the front passenger side of the intake manifold just behind the front intake manifold bolt and under the A/C compressor there is another sender with one wire. You can only see it from the passenger side. It has one wire and it is for the gauge.
Ohhhhhh.... I dont have it in front of me, but I think I know the one you are talking about, if I am not mistaken, it just has a little click-on lead, nothing really heavy duty.... I will take a look at that as soon as I can. Thanks
