89 D250 318 Exhaust Question???
Hey guys,
Currently my 89 d250 w/ 318 has a 2" y pipe off of each stock header, into a single exhaust through 1 muffler and out. Its pieced together and has a few too many clamps and needs replacement.
The Y pipe is fairly new and I wanted some ideas on what to put behind that. I was thinking of coming off the Y into a 2 1/2" pipe, through a thrush welded muffler and out.
Is 2 1/2" good for that set up or should I go 3", or something entirely different?
Thanks

Well. I have the exact same truck. I have the factory 2 inch y-pipe into the cat, about a foot of pipe, and then a thrush 28 inch glasspack. I think the 3/4 ton models have enough ground clearance that you could probably run some low hanging duals. For me, a single 2.5 pipe is fine. I think that 3 inch would be ok too. But if I was running true duals, I'd go with 2.5 for sure.
As far as sound, my current setup sounds really weak. My truck actually sounded pretty quiet with no muffler. A lot of guys around here run flowmasters way louder than my truck with no muffler. I don't know if its the cat or something, but my truck is weak, even with a glasspack. It does open up though if I really pound on it, and it does surprisingly feel a bit more responsive, and way better on the highway. Previously, I had a flowtech single in - dual out muffler exiting right before the rear axle. That sounded ok too, but I changed it out in hopes of getting more volume from the glasspack.

When I got the truck about 4 years ago it had true duals on it, both exiting to the rear of the pass. rear tire. It also had a hallowed out cat on it.
As pieces rusted out and I tried to piece things together it ended up with a new 2" Y pipe into a single 2" exhaust.
So anyhow I dont want anything too loud, but a little rumbe over stock would be nice.
As for loud without muffler, when my exhaust blew out through rust several times before the muffler it was way way too loud. Im talking embarrasing loud!
