Default Oil and valves

I have a 93 w 150 with a 318. ITs starting to get pretty cold out so im thinking of a oil change. What weight does everyone suggest for my truck. A few days ago i noticed this sound coming form the motor it kinda sounds like a exhaust leak but it stops when the truck gets warm. im thinking it may be a valve although it doesn't really sound like one. Is a small valve tick or float common in these motors?

Probably is an exhaust leak. The metal exhaust pipes expand as they get warmer. My '94 used to do the same thing before the exhaust was welded.

If it was a valve you would have bigger problems. Valves don't usually "tick", it tends to be other components like lifters (common, not a problem). You would only exerience valve float if revving the motor way past redline.

5w30 is perfect for temps ranging from 100+ to about 30 below. But why bother with switching to a synthetic??
