Default good day to buy some parts....

So I have a 91 d150 with a 318. The fuel gage doesnt work wich I am assuming it is the fuel pump/sending unit. i have been looking around and found them to be around 150 and up. I would like to verify that it isn't the gauge prior to spending the money. Can anyone give me any tips to troubleshooting this?

i am kinda torn because this is a $550 truck with an additional 200 bucks in maint. when i bought it. I don't know as though I should put any more money into it or just drive it as is till it dies or becomes unsafe. Any thoughts? If i put more money into it I will replace the brake lines and the fuel lines buy the tank. Then the fuel pump/sending unit. it is a ol farm truck............looking for input. I know these are good trucks and will last with the proper maint......
thanks,
Jt
