As for you only getting around 8mpg,I thought that was a close to normal with these trucks.I have a 89 4x4 with the 318 and I only get around 9-10 in town.

First I would ask what problem you are now experiencing, other than poor mileage, because as of your last post the truck was running great?

You are correct that these computers cannot be re flashed. The answer to number 1 is yes it will effect performance. If the answer was no it obviously would not have been put there in the first place to just add cost to the vehicle. Will this clog your cat? I don't believe so. I think if your cat is clogged it will more likely be from a leaky plenum gasket or that the medium has over time been destroyed (fell apart) and is restricting flow. There is an easy check for a clogged cat. Disconnect the pipes temporarily at the manifold and see if the problem goes away. You will know almost immediately.

The test that I use for my EGR is to simply remove it temporarily and replace it with a blank off plate, that I made, and see if the problem I was experiencing goes away. If the problem goes away I am then sure the EGR system needs trouble shooting. If the problem stays reinstall the EGR and look elsewhere.

I know you are not going to want to hear this but our trucks are not known for great mileage and you are driving a 360 in a 3/4 ton truck. You may be able to improve that 8 MPG some but not a whole lot.

same problem as before, thought it was running better, but it must have just been that it was warm enough that it didn't act up. Anyway, today I went outside and pulled the egr vac hose off. port looked plugged with some dirt or other contaminant and it made no difference to the idling of the truck whether it was connected or disconnected. I'm going to try blocking it off and if the problem goes away. if it does, I'll get a new egr and vac hoses to go with it. Thanks for the Help!

Brian

P.S. I never suggested that the air pump was a large waste of money. I was under the impression that they were put on the trucks to reduce emmissions since the government went nuts over that around those years. I know plenty of people who rip all that emissions stuff off and it runs fine. didnt know about dodge. If its inoperative, Id rather pull it off than pay big bucks for a new airpump. I've heard mixed things about doing this on the forums. Wanted your input. Thanks

I didn't mean to say you had suggested the pump was a waste of money. I meant to point out that it has a purpose or the factory wouldn't have put it on. It pumps air into the exhaust after the combustion chamber to make sure there is oxygen enough to continue burning any unburned fuel in the exhaust gases in order to lower emissions. Without that air the O2 sensor will not read correctly. If the O2 sensor doesn't read correctly the computer will not provide the proper amount of fuel via the injectors. This will result in worse fuel economy. You can, and many do, run without the pump but the engine cannot operate at peak performance without it. In the interest of honesty I would not replace my pump if it became inoperative if I could legally get away with it and I really don't know if mine still works or not.

The fact that you had no vacuum at the hose at idle is the way it should be. Disconnecting the vacuum hose will not tell you if the EGR is working properly. There should be no EGR flow at idle and therefore there is no vacuum to the EGR at idle or low speeds or if the engine has not warmed up sufficiently. If the EGR is your problem it is flowing exhaust gas at idle and/or at low RPMs when it should not. The two ways to test this are EGR valve replacement (expensive) and to remove the EGR valve temporarily and cap off the EGR port (cheap). Under no condition should you remove the EGR permanently as the ping that will result will eventually destroy your engine.

Crazzywolfie: I looked at the site you posted in this thread and it doesn't show that the 360 magnum was available in the 92, unless I am missing something.

i missed the fact he had a 360 because rocketvette95 mentioned 318. from the looks there was no 92 360 magnum. this is where having your vehicle info filled out helps.
