If the truck is stock take your VIN to your local Dodge dealer and ask for a build sheet. There may be a tag attached to the bolts on the pumpkin. Otherwise answer these questions.

1. Does it have a cover or is the pumpkin removable from the driveshaft side?
2. How many bolts are in the cover?
3. What shape is the cover? (round, oval, or triangular)
4. How is the front axle engaged? (vacuum, manual hubs, or automatic hubs)
5. What is the outside diameter of the of the axle tubes?

Block the wheels, raise one of the rear tires, truck in neutral, and parking brake off. Use chalk to mark the bottom of the tire and the yoke on the pinion. Rotate the tire one revolution while counting the number of turns of the yoke. (4 1/2 turns = 4.56, 3 1/4 turns =3.23 gears and so on)

Raise the other tire and place the truck in gear. Turn one tire forward and watch the opposite tire. If it turns forward you have some form of posi-traction, and if it rotates backward it is not posi.

okay to answer question one, there are covers(pictures of down below) and for number 4 they are manual hubs. I would raise the truck, but I dont have any jacks that go high enough haha.

So we know it is a 3.23 gear ratio. The 12 symmetrical bolts on the cover lead me to believe it is a Chrysler 9 1/4" rear differential. The front cover looks like a 10 bolt and the shape of the cover looks like a Dana 44 on the front.

Lock-up converters started in 78 as an option but I don't know if you have one or not.
