Appreciate the info! Though I'm tempted, I'm really worried that with the different stuff on a computerized vehicle I'll end up mix-matched and create a new problem. I'm hoping that with a cooler and deep pan it will keep this one running for a long time. As far as durability, heck this tranny has been running for 20 years and that says something. The previous owner used to tow a boat around. The downfall was lack of cooling for a tow vehicle I'm sure.

One thing I forgot to mention was that the 1991 manual only mentions an A-999 but not an A-998. Everywhere I looked at showed the A-998/999 to be the newer versions of the A-904.

my 91 had a A-999 when it had a v6. it had 379000km on it when i pulled it and dropped in a 318 and i'm not sure what trans it has but i think it is a 727. i don't think a lockup torque converter has to be computer controlled. before there was computers i am pretty sure they were hydrologically controlled.

Wow - the tranny downshifts now when I give it some throttle! I also refilled it with Type F fluid. I don't know about the long run but this thing runs better for now. I guess it just needed a little enema to jump start it. Shifts good - no slipping. Still haven't identified that little piece though.
