Default 91 Ram 727 transmission shifter rod adjustments??

Hi all, I've been helping my dad troubleshoot his 1991 Dodge Ram D150 today. It isn't shifting as smooth as it normally did. It seems to have extended it's shift points by a thousand or so rpm at cruising speeds. It now shifts into 2nd gear around 30-35mph instead of the 20 or so it used to. It isn't slipping, the fluid is between the hashmarks on the dipstick and has no signs of breakdown in the fluid.

Anyways, what I'm looking for is a proper method to adjusting the TV rod/cable. I dont think it has came out of adjustment, but I want to cover my bases. Is there anything else I could check as well?

Thanks,
Chris

Here's a good writeup on Torqueflites. Be sure to read Part Three introduction on problems and repairs.

Don't forget a fluid and filter change and while you are in it you may want to adjust the bands. The rear band is accessible with the pan off.

The ISC (idle speed control) motor must be retracted completely. A DBRII tool is normally used to do this but it can be done with 2 jumper wires from the battery. Disconnect the connector on the ISC with the ignition off. Connect the negative jumper to the top pin on the ISC and touch the positive to the other. Do not leave this connected for more than 5 seconds. Raise and block the vehicle. Loosen the lock screw on the throttle rod swivel so the rod moves freely. Hold the throttle lever firmly forward against its internal stop and tighten the lock screw. Lower the vehicle and reconnect the ISC electrical connector. Turn the key to RUN for at least 5 seconds but DO NOT start. Turn the key OFF. Start the vehicle and road test.

Thanks for the help guys! After some reading and the rod adjustment, the truck is shifting better than it has in a long time!
