Cummins Swap

Cummins Swap
I have a 1984 dodge power ram 4x4 250 custom prospector, with a 318, edelbrock 4bbl 600cfm performer carb, and an automatic transmission, and want to swap a 5.9l 12 valve cummins into it, and was wondering what kind of work that would take, I'm not afraid of work, but was just wanting to know what I would need to get the job done.

I have two very important words for you "DONOR TRUCK"!! After you have thought of everything you will need you will find so many small seemingly insignificant parts that you must have that it can break your bank really quickly. Not trying to discourage you just be prepared for an in depth project. Good Luck and post some pics.

That was my first Idea, only problem is, in my area, anyone that has an older cummins, they take great care of it. My biggest problem is finding the engine for the right price. I am not afraid of work, trust me. Also, I will post pics and keep you updated once I get out of school and get things rolling. Thanks for your help!

I would also suggest a donor truck, maybe one that was in an accident......you will need the engine complete with the transmission and transfer case, driveshafts then you will run into problems with the mismatching u-joints not to mention driveshaft lengths.....motor mounts will be different....your front leaf springs wont take the weight of the cummins(the engine weighs 900lb, not to mention all the other heavier stuff) so you will need new leaf springs....when you get all this sorted out your stock rear diff wont take the power you will be throwing at it........, your front diff could bend under the weight above it.....you will have to wire in the WIF (Water In Fuel) sensor if you have one....the radiator.....the list goes on
