88 D150, slams into reverse
Whats your drivetrain? The 8 1/4 rear is notorious for spider gears wearing out. Could be u-joints. I've heard over the years that you should put a torqueflite in drive before reverse the first time you shift them after parking them. Ive never had an issue personally, so I can't say why that is. Something to do with hydrualic pressures. A better description would help.
you can also adjust your 1 & reverse band in your transmission, that was the cause of my clunk when I put it into reverse....I am not a tranny guy so I will not attempt to explain why this is....but I did manage to do it myself
Other than higher than normal idle speeds or rear axle or driveline issues, harsh reverse will happen when the direct clutch is applied before the rear band.. When the gear selector is placed in reverse , for a smooth reverse, the rear band must apply BEFORE the direct clutch....Simple band adjustment could solve your problem......If the direct clutch applies first it begins to turn the geartrain, now the band has to stop an internal rotation of gears, so the harshness is felt..Also Chrysler uses a waved clutch retaining ring to help smooth the reverse engagement..If that is replaced with a standard flat retaining ring, clutch clearance must be set a little loose or Bang reverse will occur..

I have a 86 d150 318 auto no o/d. Have not drove it in about 2 yrs trans messing up. When i stopped and ready to go took a few presses on gas to go but on the road great. I changed the filter and it was very clogged. Now i i start it and move it in the drive way it "jumps" does not matter if in "d" or "r". Does anyone here know why? thanks

I cooked the transmission in my Ramcharger a few years back 4x4ing in the snow, when I would drive it would "shudder" under power, more so when i would accelerate harder, this happened in any gear....it needed a full rebuild, luckly I have a friend that works in a trans. shop and $600 later it was all fixed up including a new torque convertor
