Default would i benefit from replacing stock air cleaner?

trying to get more power and mpg...should i switch to an open element air cleaner and stash the bulky restrictive can for winter? also, i know it's a simple swap, but do i need to plug or re-route anything? like vacuum hoses, pcv, etc? anything else i should keep in mind? it's a 318 TBI...(first year)

Granted mine is a V6, but I had clearance problems with the TB. I ended up using an Edelbrock with a flat bottom pan to clear the TB cause the Holley drops down to get a taller filter and didn't fit around the TB. Need a longer hold down bolt or unthread it a little to reach. I used the crankcase vent tube but had to get a longer hose.

IMO, get a spare air cleaner housing and some tin snips, and go to town. Just make sure the bottom and top of the filter are sealed. An aftermarket replacement for the stock filter should far outflow the TBI itself.

i think a better less restrictive air cleaner should help if burn cleaner and possibly increase your mpg.

I went with the ten inch Edelbrock and found a 3.5 inch tall filter. looks good and clears everything. That with the duals I had put on I REALLy noticed a difference...
