87 d100 383 swap
hi guys im new here my names Jeremy i have a 87 d100 with a 318 auto. i had gas get into the oil pan and now its just knocking away. (gonna blow sometime still runs great tho). anyway i was talking to a friend of mine and he has a 383 with a 727 bolted to it that he said i can have for 100 bucks (much cheaper than a rebuild). how much work would it be to swap in a 383. he seems to think it would just drop in and his top half of mount would bolt to my bottom. is this right any tips or insight from anyone who has done this would be greatly appreciated. looking forward to hearing from some mopar lovers. thanks jeremy
i think the big thing would be to measure the length of the transmission. if it is the same you will most likely you wont have to find a new drive shaft. essentially it should most like bolt in but you need to make sure it has the right oil pan for a truck. if the engine has the oil pan with the sump at the back you won't have to spend money on the parts to convert it.
both trannys are 727. is there any computers for the 318 im assuming not since its a carb motor. so basically the oil pans is the only thing i need to watch for and it should drop right in

This topic comes up a lot. Here's a site that specializes in big block swaps. Be careful, some people aren't patient and will bite your head off if you don't do a search first. Just under the black bar at the top of the page is a search function. Type 440 or 383 to get some previous threads.
Big blocks are the ultimate dream for any Mopar guy but money and gas prices usually bring people back to reality. Hope you can afford it cause I'd like to see some nice pics and a ride if you are ever in my neck of the woods.
Good luck with it.

when i search for 383 or 440 nothing comes up but anyway i hope someone can clear up my oil pan question. thats the only thing im confused about right now. also do i need bb truck mounts or do you think the ones on the motor will work thanks again jeremy
the oil pan pretty much has to look and sit identical to the one that is on your current engine with the bolt for draining the oil at the back.

I tried the link and got Bouchillon Performance.
For $20 they will send you the complete installation instructions detailing everything that will need to be done. The motor mounts and brackets you are asking about are listed on their site. The oil pan will have to be a rear sump pan to clear the crossmember. Usually people pull 440 motors from cars that have a front sump - hence the need for the other pan & dipstick. Brake boosters on some trucks are too large for clearance and a smaller one may be needed. $20 is a good investment and great reference if you decide to go through with it. Here it is:

Okay, I changed the search to "440 swap" and "big block" and got some hits but you will have to go back a ways. Inside the black bar is "search". Use the drop down and you can click "advanced search" for 1st Gen only etc. to get more direct search.
Anyways, found this one with some links on it too.
