Default could this cause a knock in my 318

so anyway a couple months ago my fuel pump went in my 87 d100 and i had some gas leak into the pan. i changed the pump but didnt think anything about the oil until about 200 300 or so miles later when i checked the oil and smelled gas. it had a slight tapping before pump went but now is slowly getting worse. i cant quite tell where the noise is comming from but it sounds like the rear of the oil pan. after talking to a few people about it i was told it could be my torque converter bolts comeing loose cause apparently thats an issue. also told it may also be a crack in the flex plate. but i know that gas in the oil pan can cause bearing damage. any ideas on what it could be or things to try before spending money. thanks jeremy

have you change the oil yet? if not that is what you may want to try. if it don't get better after an oil change then you may have a problem.

if there was gas in the oil and an oil change did not help then you may have a bottom end problem. it is really hard to say.

would it be worth it to rebuild bottom end or just look for a new motor the parts i can think of needing are only gonna run me about 350 or so not about 550 to do a bb swap witch i was thinking bout just not in the budget now i can get anytime tho i now where 2 r sitting.
heres the list of parts i can think of that i would need or just much easier to replace with motor out let me know if you can think of anything else i might need would be great

crank kit w/ main and rod bearings
timing chain set (double roller)
full engine gasket set
freeze plug kit
oil pump and pickup

I like to have as much information as possible. I would do a compression check to find out what shape the top end of the engine is in before making a decision on what to do.

from what i can tell the compression is good it only has 110k on it. i had to retime it not long after i got it and using a ratchet on the crank pully to turn the engine over to tdc on the number 1 cylinder i had to put some muscle into it to turn so compression feels good but thats the best i can do without an actual compression tester. i have felt motors with low compression so i do have a good idea how they should feel. so with the info provided what do you think bout my part list. anything i should add or am i good to go with what i listed providing it is only the bottom end. (witch i really think is the only problem) thanks jeremy

i agree with SEAL. a compression test could reveal if you have some problem.

100psi minimun; no more than 25psi variation between cylinders.
