Why do you think oil is bypassing the rings? Generally oil in the cylinders is valve stem seals.

i was changing the oil the other day and there is a gas smell in it, it is going to be the valve stems i was thinking wrong. I have screwed my self i put new plugs and wires on and got the wiring crossed i set it back to what its supose to be the firing order, but now the truck wont start. I never took a picture of the plug wire first order so i have no idea. The rotor is in the four oclock positon please help with this. the engine turns over but wont fire up.

the only thing i can think of is bring the #1 piston to top dead center and check where the rotor it pointing and make sure it is pointing to where the #1 wire is. then clock wise from that it should be 1-5-3-6-2-4

usually there is some timing marks on the harmonic balancer and on the timing cover right beside the harmonic balancer. the 0 on the timing chain cover is top dead center.
found this and thought it might help

Default awesome

well i got it running again thank to a better understanding of the way it worked. A side question how can i get rid of the missing advancing the timing or slowing it down a bit, no matter idle or revving it still misses.

dipstick on a manual transmission? never seen one and doubt i ever will. there should be a bolt in the side that has to be removed to top it up or check fluid level.

Here you go Tex:

http://identifix.com/Specs/Display/T.../mtdt00004.PNG

What you will need to set your timing is a timing light and find the emissions label under the hood with your timing info. Warm your motor to normal operating temp. Hook up your timing light to the + and - battery posts and the number 1 spark plug wire. No.1 should the first spark plug from the front on a slant 6, if I'm not mistaken. If vacuum advance distributor, pull the vacuum hose from the distributor and plug it. This will keep your timing mark steady. The timing mark is located just off the harmonic balancer on the driver's side. You may want to clean and mark it with witeout before so it can be seen easily. Aim the timing light at the timing mark and set according to the emissions label by turning the distributor clockwise or counter clockwise as needed in small increments. Tighten the distributor and recheck to be sure it did not move. Plug the vacuum hose back into the distributor.
