Default Need help with new project truck!

My name's D. I'm 25. I'm a girl.

Ok, so I bought a '90 Dodge Ram w150 v8. Super sweet condition. I want to get an Edelbrock or Holly, K&N, Flows or something similar, and a few aftermarket cosmetics. I'm having problems figuring out what carb to buy. I'll eventually add a lift and new wheels and tires. But right now I want to make sure she runs and sounds great. The only problem I've found so far is that there is a power steering leak. I'm new to project vehicles and need all the help I can get! Internet research can only go so far...

Can someone please direct me in the right direction on what I may, should, or shouldn't need. Ask me more specifics if I haven't covered enough and I'll answer as best I can. Thanks!

Welcome Aboard HarleyQuinn! Stay tuned - a Technician (or member) will jump in shortly to provide a possible solution. In the meantime, don't forget to browse Sub-Forums: Ram for stuff related to your ride.

Hi D. I hope you understand that you have a fuel injected engine with a computer (assuming it is stock). If it is not stock please let us know what modifications have been made. If you want a carb you will need an intake manifold, fuel pressure regulator or separate fuel pump, distributor, voltage regulator and an electronic engine controller at a minimum. You will also have to modify the transmission kick down linkage if it is an automatic. I would recommend a 4 barrel that is no larger than 650CFM.

Should I not bother with it then? I mean, that sounds like a lot more than I was bargaining for when I considered a carb. Will the cost be worth the benefits? As far as I can tell it's all stock.

I can't speak for everyone, but my '89 is 99% stock as far as the factory EFI is concerned, and runs really well. If you have all the necessary sensors and whatnot and they all talk to the computer the way they're supposed to, the system is pretty flawless.

I think the main reason so many switch to carb (again, just speaking as me here) is to get increases in performance. Our trucks don't have "tuneable" technology. They're pretty much set up as "it is what it is". Personally, I'd keep it EFI unless you're planning on getting more performance out of your engine, in which case, yes, it's not as simple as switching intake manifolds and throttle body to carb. But, there's plenty of people on here that have done it and lots of posts to read to walk you through it should you choose to do so. Good luck!

i would say as long as it aint broke don't fix it.

the wiring and all electrical parts required to swap to carb would cost about $250. i don't know if you would necessarily need to swap intakes. your truck already has an electric fuel pump so you would need to get a regulator and carb.

I agree.. not broke dont fix, maybe save up some $$ and put some good quality headers on and some flomaster mufflers on for that rumble. your EFI will be less hastle keep it!
