carburetor Question
Hi, Im new to the forum and im not sure if anyone can or would help me with this and im not sure if im posting in the right area but here goes. By the way thanks for the help in advance! =) I have an old 1987 Dodge W150 RAM with the 3.7 V6 in it. Im having trouble with it idling properly. From what i can tell the choke has a plate that adjusts as the idle screw touches it. the plate wobbles and the idle screw falls off while driving and cause the truck to die when coming to a stop. I put a nut on the end of the screw and it seemed to help for a while. i drove it all day without any problem but by the end of the day it seemed to slip of and not i can't get it to sit back in the right place for long at all. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience that they could shed some light on about it or give me some info on if the piece is part of the choke or the carburetor. I know that it goes into the back of the carburetor but i don't know how it is held in place and was wondering if that bolt that holds the plate in place can be tightened or replace and if there is a simple fix that i am over looking. I look forward to hearing back from everyone and once again thanks in advance.
Thanks for moving to the proper location. In my research online i am have a difficult time finding any information on my truck. Would an auto parts store keep a rebuild kit in stock for my truck? Im not to sure if that is going to solve my problem because i don't know how the bolt that holds the plate is in there. It doesn't feel like its threaded in. My first thought was that its held in by a pin inside the carb and that the pin may have broken but it doesnt come all the way out...its only loose by maybe 1/16 of an inch or so. there isnt much wobble and i wonder if it may just be ware on the pin or the plate but i cant really tell. Sorry if this is bit confusing. Thanks! =)
Not sure exactly what you are talking about but you speak of the idle screw falling out. The idle screw should have a spring on it that provides tension so that it holds the screw where you set it and prevents it from falling out. It is difficult to be more specific without knowing exactly what carb is on it and I have no listing to help you figure out what carb they put on the V-6. From what I am hearing I doubt a rebuild kit will help because it sounds like your problem is with hard parts of the carb and the kits only contain soft parts.
The idle screw doesn't fall out. the plate that the idle screw pushes that i spoke of (the wobbling one)when it wobble the idle screw falls off(i mean veers off the the left right or under the plate. ill try to get some pics off it if i get a shot when i get off work. Thanks for the replys guys.
Most idle screws set against a plate/lever that is permanently attached to the throttle shaft. The throttle plates (butterflies) are screwed to the shaft and hold the shaft into the carb. This is called the throttle shaft and lever assembly. The plate is usually permanently affixed to the shaft by peening. When these come loose replacement of the shaft and lever assembly is the only permanent fix and these parts are usually only available thru a carb rebuilder or a junk yard if at all.

I'm not sure if that's the piece that I'm talking about. sorry its really hard to explain. Its seems to be incredibly difficult to find anything on these trucks. I'm gonna grab a Haynes manual from auto-zone after work. They finally got one in! When i get my hands on that hopefully i can scan the pictures of the carb breakdown. Then maybe we can all be on the same page and figure out a solution! thanks for the the help so far!
Thanks for the help guys sorry for not replying several weeks ago. The solution was to pull the pin out and put jb weld on it because it kept sliding out causing the idle screw to miss the plate. She has been running like a champ for several weeks now with no issues! Thanks for all the help guys
