88 Ram Idle problem
Hello all, me again. I posted in an earlier post about this problem, but I had the truck year wrong. I have also done some more trial and error. The truck will die when I bring it to a stop. It will only do it when warmed up, and then only if the truck has been moving for 10-15 min. After it dies, if I let it sit for 2-3 min it will start up and run fine for 10-15 min, then at the next stop it dies again. If I try to start it immedietly after it dies it will not start unless I treat it like its flooded and push the pedal all the way to the floor, then it will start, but will idle very roughly. If when coming to a stop, I keep my foot on the accelerator and give it a constant, ite amount of gas, it will run fine, no dieing and no rough idleing. I have also noticed that after it dies, and I start it back up, the oil preasure is quite abit lower than before it died. It is still in the normal range, but lower than before. It is an 88 dodge ram w/ throttlebody fuel injection and a 3.9 engine. Thanks and any help is appritiated.
I'd do the following:
Test for vacuum leaks - visually inspect all vacuum lines for cracks or being unplugged, also spray carb cleaner or whatever it is that you spray to test for leaks.
Read the last post of the other thread you started - sounds like he might be on to something - heat issues. Inspect your coil, or perhaps just replace it. Make sure the ballast resistor is in place and not broken.
Check for choke operation - if the choke isn't working right it could cause problems too.

I took it by one of my fathers friends today at a shop, and he told me to check the fuel preasure and fuel filter. We are going to do that tomorrow, and we will look into the coil. I've already checked for vaccum leaks, so that wasn't the problem. Thanks for the sugestions, anymore would be great.
Well, we've made progess. We were rechecking the vaccum lines today, and found a few that were plugged. Also, on the egr valve, one side had actually almost completely rusted shut. There was also something that almost looked like a filter with three vaccum lines comming off of it, two were attached to the egr, and one went off into a larger bundle. It was clogged as well. We cleaned it out, and cleaned off the end of the egr valve that was rusted shut. That has helped out immensly. Now it will not die when you bring it to a stop, and it has its old acceleration back. I do have a new problem though. Now when you push on the gas from idle, the engine acts like it wants to die, but it always recovers. If you press on the gas and hold it steady, it will act like it is going to die, but it will recover and then it will accelerate like normal.
