Default Transmission Slips?

I have a 86 318 w150 with the 3 speed auto. I replaced the 2 barrel carb with a 4 barrel edlebrock. I couldnt buy on intake at the time so I had to buy an adapter. (Mistake I know). It runs fine but when it shifts it will drop rpm then catch and go like it slips. I adjusted the kickdown and its as far as it will go. Any ideas?

When you say you adjusted the kickdown, are you referring to the kickdown band on the trans or the throttle linkage at the carb? If this problem surfaced only after the carb change I would think your throttle linkage is not adjusted properly or the carb linkage is not compatible with the throttle linkage. What carb did you install?

It won't hurt the trans but it won't be very enjoyable to drive. You say you adjusted it as far as it would go. Did you follow the actual adjustment procedure from a manual? If not that is what you need to do.

I do not believe we are talking about the same thing and I apologize if I have not been clear. The "throttle rod" that goes from the carb down to the transmission is the part of the linkage I am referring to. This has nothing to do with controlling the RPMs. It is the linkage that tells the trans when to shift based on how far open the throttle plates (butterflies) are. This is how it senses engine load. When this is adjusted correctly the trans should shift into third (high) at 20-30 MPH under light throttle pressure. Look up "throttle rod adjustment". It should be in the automatic transmission section of the manual.

The 1406 carb is a universal carb that fits many applications and has special adaptors so that it can work for each different application. Is your 1406 compatible with your application? To give you an idea of what I am talking about go here and look under throttle brackets and hardware.

Yes i was talking about that rod. It has a "slit" in it on one end and just a hole on the other. I geuss I should have said so it shifted at the same speed with the same amount of throttle.

i don't know if the kickdown setup on my 81 is correct but it seem to work fairly good. just a nut and a bolt. i held throttle wide open and push the rod all the way back and slid the nut and bolt to the other rod and tightened it. my truck seem to shift into 2nd gear when i am doing about 24mph and it usually does it fairly smoothly.
