Default needing to buy a new carb

Hey guys like it says in the title I am aiming to buy a new carb since the one I have now is dripping gas and every mechanic I see says its trashed. So I was going to ask you guys if I should buy another carter bbd (150 is the cheapest I can find as a holley reman) or if there is another carb that will match the bolt pattern on the intake that will have better hp and mpg applications. I would like the new carb to not cost much more than 150 and be able to be slapped in without a headache haha. Any help from you guys that know carbs would be a lot of help.

Whats the motor? Any other mods currently, or in the near future?

Sorry for the lack of info, I have 318 from a 1977 diplomat (I think) in my 87 dodge. I don't think there are any mods besides duel exhaust. I don't have any mods I can think of for the near future but further down the road when I'm done school I plan to drop in a 360.

I installed the Edelbrock 1406 last November (318, 4 bbl) and have been pleased with it. It is a newly manufactured carburetor and not a rebuild. It was an easy install, the Edelbrock tech support were outstanding, and I believe they are easy to maintain & adjust. The least expensive way for me to get it was to purchase it from Advance Auto online, use their big discoung coupons for online ordering and then pickup at store. No shipping fees, discount, and easy returns.

Just out of curiosity (my eyes getting bigger than my wallet haha) could an edelbrock 4bbl bolt on to a 360 intake? I know it wouldn't bolt to the small bolt pattern on the 318. I saw on ramcharger central that a guy was saying he actually had better mpg out of a 4bbl edelbrock than his stock 2bbl, could that be possible?

If noone else has any information on carb choices I guess I'm going to buy the stock carter when I get off work today.

I would give Edelbrock a call and talk to a technician, tell them what you have and they will tell you which carb to purchase:

If your priority is $150.00 stay with the 2 barrel. If you can afford it I would recommend a 4 barrel if you can keep your foot out of the gas because it will improve your gas mileage. The primaries are smaller in the 4 barrel than in the 2 barrel, with more fuel being available when it is needed. I am not a fan of any rebuilt carb unless you are capable of a proper rebuild yourself or know someone that is capable that will do it for you. The 1406 Edelbrock is a good choice but so is a Holley. A 600 CFM will be good for both the 318 and the 360 later. Make sure what ever carb you go with is compatible with the kick down system if you have an automatic trans.

I do have an automatic trans but I already ordered another of the stock carter 2 barrel (new), it has treated me well up to now. I figure I will just get an edelbrock down the road. The cheapest I could find one was 250 and that not including the new intake.
