Auto to Manual Swap
#11
Any 5.2/5.9 equipped truck, including dakotas, 1500,2500 and 3500s will work. Dakotas and 5.2 1500's came with the NV3500. There might be an exception, but that is all I have ever seen in those. 5.9 1500's and heavier use the NV4500. I have been running an NV3500 in my W350 for quite a while now, (out of a 1500) and I havent had a lick of trouble. It has had its share of towing as well. Pretty much all you will need from your late model donor vehicle is the transmission, master and slave clutch cylinder assembly (comes as one piece) and clutch pushrod. Probably the starter... Cant recall if the old style will work with the newer tranny or not. I dont think so, but please, someone correct me if I am wrong. From your gen donor truck, all you will need is the clutch pedal assembly. Had to build a very basic adaption for the tranny bolts to fit my mount. Pretty easy swap really. I even used both of my stock driveshafts without modification.

Well, i think I'm going to go with the np435 because i found a 91 w150 manual on craigslist for a great price. Hopefully going to look at it this weekend. Who knows if it turns out to be in better shape than my current truck, i might take the lift off my current one and put it on the new one

Well, back to the drawing board. Turns out they sold the truck, i caught it a day after posted and missed it, but it is what it is. The more i debate 5 speed vs 4 speed, the more im leaning towards the 5 speed, although if i go with the 5 speed i think ill go with a nv3500 because they are more avalible and cheaper. For what i use my truck for (mild trail riding, minimal towing if any, and dd most of the time) i think the nv3500 would hold up just fine. Does anyone know the length difference between the nv3500 and the A518, and will the 5 speed bolt up to my current transfer case (np241, which ive decided i am going to leave alone unless i find a really good deal).

Ok, so similar length means i don't have to worry about drive shafts and moving the transfer case. I thought i read somewhere that the second gens used the np241, which would mean the tranny should bolt up, im assuming i would need a new bellhousing though, right? Just a side question, how common are 2 gens with manuals, cuz all the ones I've ever seen were auto. Thanks for the complement about the truck,i really like it, but there is a reason i took the picture from the angle i did...

The NV3500 has an integrated bellhousing, so no need to worry there. most 2nd gens are autos, but the 1/2 ton sticks aren't that rare, there's 1 or 2 in my local junk yard currently. Same transmission is found in the dakotas with the 3.9 or 5.2 (stick obviously). The drivelines should work as they are.
