Default Hello!

Hello everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself, since I am willing to bet that I will be coming here for advice quite a few times. Well, my name is Josh, and currently a football player at Hastings College. My experience with cars is mostly if not all on imports. My daily driver is a 2003 civic, but recently I have acquired my first truck. I managed to barter some items I had lying around for a 1975 W100 360 converted to automatic on the floor. The previous owner was an auto body student, so unfortunately it was painted camouflage.

As of now, the truck is not running, but I'm getting pretty close. Replaced the fuel pump today, but it still isnt pulling fuel from the tank. It does want to kick a little with fuel in the carb. I'm guessing its time to replace the fuel lines, but that will probably have to wait until I get a little more money.

Well, that's my introduction, and Ill try to get some pics of the truck online sometime this week!

Welcome to DF! Good luck on your project, if the truck had been sitting a while, the fuel lines may be clogged.

Welcome to the forum. Are you sure you got the pumps drive lever on the correct side of the drive cam when you installed the new pump? For trouble shooting you can put some gas in a small can and feed the fuel pump out of that with a short piece of fuel line to help isolate the problem.

I know this is probably a ridiculous question, but how would you correctly seat the drive lever? Is there a certain point the cam needs to sit at during installation?

Welcome, there's a lobe at the end of the cam that pushes the lever down on the fuel pump, the fuel pump lever needs to be under it, ive seen a couple people put it on top accidentilly, when I put my pump on it just so happened that the lobe was to the point of pushing down the drive lever and I fought it to put it on, you'll feel where the lobe is at when you touch it with the end of the drive lever when you put the pump on, if the lobe is to where its pushing the lever down, you could bump the starter and try to get it to where it isn't fighting you as much, once you have the drive lever under the lobe, put your town bolts and new gasket in, tighten it up and you should be good to go, hope this helps.

Alright you guys, I know its been a while, but I'm back! I got the fuel pump under the cam lobe, and I was able to get the engine to run a little by feeding the pump via a small cup filled with gas. Ran a little rich, but nothing too serious. My problem now is, the truck does not want to run off of the fuel lines. I saw a small leak near the opening of the metal line in the engine bay, but I simply slid the rubber tubing over the leak, and clamped it there. I also tested the fuel lines, and there are no other leaks in the system, and no fuel being deposited under the truck. I can feed a little into the carb, and the truck fires, but it dosen't want to pull fuel from the tank. On a side note, I hear a sort of gurgling sound from the tank after I crank it. Any ideas on what could be the culprit?

Sounds like when you suck on a straw in your soda and it has a crack part way up letting in air. Maybe your pickup is cracked, rotted or broken. Are you sure the sucking sound is in the tank? You may need to drop the tank and check it out.

You are sure it has fuel in the tank - right.

You should change out all your rubber fuel lines. Mine on the 76 RC were all dry rotted.

The truck does have gas in the tank. Its not so much a sucking sound in the tank, but is more like a gurgle, like air is flowing back from the lines into the tank. How many other rubber lines does the truck have? I already replaced the ones in the engine bay, too and from the pump. I saw the one on the passenger side outside the frame, but I am unsure about the other(s)?
