My Speedo doesn't work....1991 W150
So, when i bought the truck, the guy said he had troubleshot the problem with the speedo/odo/trip meter not functioning to a speedo drive gear. I have not looked but it seems logical. Anyway, I want to know where that gear is and how to check it in my truck...particulars below in my sig line.
it should be near the output shaft of the transfer case. there should be a sensor that screws on or something. before you check the gear you may want to mark the housing because it rotates. if it is not just right i think the gears may not engage or could possibly strip. they are only plastic.
Well, THAT was easy! I got under the truck about five minutes after I posted this, there was an obvious speed sensor there on the tail of the T case, I removed it with a big set of channel locks, tried to run the shaft connected to the gear inside the housing and it was gronchy as hell. I looked on the net for a speed sensor and found it. It turns out NAPA had them in stock since it is the same for a bunch of cars and trucks so I went and bought one. Cast 50 bucks but it took three minutes to swap out and the thing works perfectly! It is almost exactly accurate too only being almost a MPH slower than actual which I checked with my GPS. Here's what it looks like and where it is.
