the only holes i know of that is usually 1/2" is the one come from the filler neck vent. i think it is suppose to help gas flow into the tank quicker.
It does help gas flow. Its kinda like the vent on the top of gas cans. You can pour the gas out without it, but if you forget to open that vent, it is going to take a while.
