hello I am David, I own a 86 Dodge D150 2wd. The truck is all factory, 318 2BBL carb factory tranny and rear end. I looking to build this truck after the military but i don't know a good tranny. I'm looking to put a 6.7 408 stroker create engine in it, but i don't what transmission to back it. i want to keep it automatic ad keep the shiftier on the column. every transmission i find on the internet are ratchet shifters. Any advice? I was thinking of bolting it up to my factory transmission but i don't know if it will hold up. I'm open to any advice.

Im sure somebody will be able to be more specific, but Im sure you have some variant of the 727 trans if you currently have an auto. As is, probably wont hold for long, but 727's can be built to hold incredible amounts of power. They are often regarded as one of the best classic drag transmissions out there. By the time your truck was built, that transmission had been used in a variety of vehicles for at least 20 years. Most of the bugs in yours have been worked out already.

i think a 727 would hold up to the abuse you could put it through with a 408. if not 727 are usually dirt cheap to rebuild.

now if you are wanting to upgrade and have the money to spend then you may want to look at a 46rh megaviper from transmissioncenter.net. this transmission should be strong enough to handle that 408 plus get you good gas mileage on the highway with that 4th gear. you may have to shorten the drive shaft and extend the trans mount a tiny bit to make it work but it would be worth it. only thing is you might have to talk with with the guys there to see what you might need.

personally I would do a 727 with all heavy duty parts. They are the best three speed trans ever built, and would be fine almost stock if they were fresh. But I would build one up to race specs. It won't cost much and it'll last no problem. I had a 1974 Ramcharger which I swapped in a 426 wedge into and it had the stock freshened up (w HD clutches and valve body) trans in it when I did the swap. Even with 500hp and a shoot ton of TQ it lasted for a couple years (eve with 40in Super Swampers) before I decided to have it built up.

the mega viper i suggested is good for anything up to 700hp. plus you get the 4 speed auto which will give you better gas mileage on the highway and the 46rh's are geared a bit different than the 727 to give you a bit more torque.

I am also pushing the 727.

I've got on in my 76, granted, it's stock 400, I wouldn't run any other auto in it.

Personally, I would try and get a 727 with a lock up torque converter, to try and keep the rpm's down on the highway. But that's just me.

I don't know enough about Mopar autos, but would also suggest a stoutly built 4 speed auto if you are planning to daily drive this truck on the freeway. Lower first gear and a over drive really helps.

i think you might have better luck searching if you use the word limited slip differential. i think you may also want to figure out what axle is under the truck. i would guess it has a 9 1/4 rear end which can usually be identified by the stop sign shaped diff cover.
