Default 1989 dodge ram

Hi I hope you guys can help me figure this out as I don't want to junk my truck.

I have a 1989 dodge power ram 318 4x4. It has a 6" lift kit on it with 35x12.50x15 tires and a 8 ft bed. The truck starts up and runs fine but randomly will just start revving at low speeds almost like I put it in neutral then I'll hear a loud bang and it will run fine. Other times I can drive it and mash the pedal to the floor and it runs fine and shifts smoothly. my thought was if it was the trans going wouldn't it be a constant issue. I have had the truck lifted for about 8 years so it's not like a issue with being lifted.. I don't drive it much and I don't take it offroading.. Local transmission shop wants $1800 to rebuild it and I just don't want to put that into it if it isn't the problem. Thank you for your help in advance!

Will

I've heard people with the symptom of having to mash the pedal to get the truck to recover, and it was their fuel pump. I'd see if that is the problem

Sounds almost like it's flooding. Having to mash the gas to the floor would clear it.

What he means, if I decipher his code right, is that it is free revving at times intermittently. He makes it sound as if it is "acting" like he slipped it into neutral, then the loud bang I assume is when it goes back into gear. I think that it might just need the trans to be serviced. All the zippy lubrication places do a complete flush for like 40 clams and what ever the problem, this is good to do to an auto since you have way bigger tyres than you need for the street. Which is of course the reason your tranny is acting up. I'll bet money you didn't regear it when you did the tyres right?

Yes, thank you for decoding my message... Lol ..I didn't regear it, I know I should of. Is there a way I can flush it myself as I'm nervous to drive it, I don't want to get stuck and getting it towed is hard due to the tires... I did change the fluid and screen but didn't flush.. a neighbor told me to add brake fluid to swell the band's up but I feel like it's not the bands..
