Default Starter not working when I turn the ignititon switch

The starter on the '89 D100 I just acquired is not working when I turn the key in the ignition switch. I took the starter off and checked it out and it powers up ok. How do I go about checking the solenoid and the ignition switch? Any other ideas on what might be causing my problems?

I would be willing to bet that it is an issue with the starter relay, wiring, or the ignition switch.

you are pretty vague there dodge dude.

best thing to do is test all the fuses for power with the key in the run position. if any of the fuses don't have power then that may narrow down were you need to look.

Also, the neutral safety switch may be malfunctioning, especially if the shift linkage or transmission has been worked on. You can try starting it in neutral, if you haven't already. Even smacking the gear selector farther up may work.

Of course, this is one of many things that could be wrong, but its free and quick.

Not the ignition switch. Checked this morning. I got power to the starter terminals. I'll check the starter again.

you only have 2 wires that run to the starter. 1 that powers the starter motor and 1 that activates the solenoid. you put power to the small one that goes to the solenoid the the starter should turn over.

Ok, got the starter figured out, now to figure out why the carb is spewing gas when when turning over the engine. I'll take a picture and start another thread.

is gas being blown out of the barrels or is it coming out of the vent tube?
