Default Fuel Gauge not working

The fuel gauge in my '86 ram hasn't worked since I bought the truck and I'm finding it hard to guess when it needs to be topped up or not.
Can anyone point me in the right direction on things to check to get the gas gauge working? What should I be looking for in terms of wiring or to determine if the gauge itself is brroken?

Default RE: Fuel Gauge not working

You need to take the power wire off the fuel tank sending unit and ground it with the key in the "on" position. If the gauge goes all the way over to the right then the problem is at the sender or it's wiring. If you have a bad sender, send it away to have it rebuilt as the new ones from Dodge are not calibrated correctly.
