Default 1990 Ramcharger Carb Problems

I have been driving my Ramcharger for over 15 years (original owner), and won't give it up! It has always been maintained in top condition, but I have a new problem--- runs way too rich. I have done all I can do, from complete ignition rebuild to thourough throttle body ignition cleaning. Things are better, but still too rich.

I suspect the computer, but the code comes out a 37 (torque convertor), and also occaisionly refers to an O2 sensor.

Any ideas?
Thanks, Eric

Hi Eric, I have a 77 W200 with a 440 since 1977. Anyway, you have Throttle Body Injection(TBI) and is usually pretty reliable. Ignore the Code 37, that comes up on all trucks that are NOT equipped with lock-up torque convertor. O2 codes may come up unil you get the rich condition fixed and/or you may need a new one?
The air/fuel mixture is controlled in part by the Coolant Temperature Sensor. When the engine is cold you get a rich mixture and when it warms up it starts to lean out. This can go out of spec and NOT post an error code in the computer. There is 1 sensor for the dash gauge and 1 sensor for the computer, you want to replace the 1 for the computer, should be up near the thermostat.

Here's my suggestions...
1. Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor.

2. Run a can of SeaFoam through the gas tank to clean up the inside of the injectors and engine. Get it at NAPA or CarQuest and other places. www.seafoamsales.com
2. Pull the injectors out of the throttle body and put new o-ring seals on them or better yet, rebuild the throttle body and use a tune up kit that includes all the gaskets.

3. Check/clean the vacuum source(carbon build-up)for the MAP sensor and replace the vacuum hose.
4. Could have bad injector/s.
5. Might need a fuel pressure check.
6. Pull all electrical connectors off the throttle body including the caps over the injectors and make sure they are not loose fitting or corroded. When putting them back on use a thin coating of dielectric grease on the terminals to help keep them corrosion free.
7. Do you have the correct temp thermostat?
8. Take a look at this Service Bulletin and see if your TB has this date code, if it does then we need to get rid of it.
Do you have a 318 or 360?
Need help finding parts or part numbers, just let me know.[sm=icon_cheers.gif]

Throttle Body - Hard Starts, Rough Idle

Models

1990 AB & AD Truck With 5.2L Engine

Subject

Hard Starts, Rough Idle

Index

DRIVEABILITY

Date December 11, 1989

No.

18-18-89

(C18-22-9)
P-4288
BODY CODE LEGEND

AB - RAM VAN/RAM WAGON AD - DODGE RAM TRUCK

SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Engine starts hard, particularly when hot. Rough idle.

DIAGNOSIS

Inspect the left side (driver's side) of the throttle body for a build date code. The build code is a four digit number located on the top center of the throttle body casting "boss," and is immediately below the throttle body part number.

If the build date is 2409 (240 days of 1989) or earlier, pressurize the fuel system by using the DRB II and inspect both throttle body venturi below each injector for fuel leakage. If fuel leakage is present, remove the injector and inspect the lower O-ring for damage. If the O-ring is cut, the throttle body must be replaced with a late style unit which has the lower fuel port raised .030 in., and also has injector cylinder walls which have been burnished.

NOTE: IF THE BUILD DATE IS 2419 OR LATER, IT IS THE LATER STYLE THROTTLE BODY AND ALREADY HAS THE RAISED FUEL PORT, AND THE BURNISHED INJECTOR CYLINDER WALLS.
