CEL/EGR Maint Light & Parking Brake Light Help
hey alls im sayin is that my instructor jumped the terminals on the obd 1 port under the hod and my emr light flashed the codes idk how he did it but it happened....According to the Chiltons manual AND the Mitchell 1 program the 1987 federal 318 carbureted engine does NOT have O2 sensors it is only the California one
PA inspections vary by county population my county has a grand total of like 3000 people in it so we don't have emmissions checks, however for the regular state inspection if it came with it from the factory it has to have it. and since I proved you could have ordered the truck from factory with or without the so called "mini Ox" converter on the y pipe it passed. I just unbolt my exhaust and throw a glasspack on for insp. then its back to straight pipe.

shultz, i'm leaning toward agreeing with you about the O2 sensor especially going through my FSM several times. I live in Dauphin county, maybe a damn mile over the line from schuyllkill who doesn't need emissions.
i am damn intrigued by this light issue.
do you have to have special access for that mitchell 1 program to look things up like that?

yeah I live in Sullivan County.... I go to college in Alfred new York and the college supplies the program for us to look up specs and stuff for the vehicles we work on and I use it to look up the procedures to do stuff to my truck....but yeah I guess you could say its special access... they don't give us the info to sign in its just on computers around the shop because they try to make it as realistic as possible to train for the "real world"
would you be able to get a pdf or something that could show proof that it doesnt need an O2 sensor and it could be ordered without the ox? figure that would just be good to throw in the glovebox.
and if your class isnt busy find out how your instructor fiddled with the lights haha

MOPAR, so you're saying there's not light at all in the dash to flash the codes with the on/off key trick? The gist i got from shultz was that the EGR maintenance light pulled double duty.
As for cats, yes i need them for my state emissions inspection. I have to say i am skeptical that i have an O2 sensor but i can't find it. The FSM show one for the California 318, and one for the 6 cylinder engine. I also found text in the FSM that states an O2 sensor would be for a Feedback Carb only.

1988 was a transitional year and I only have a manual for 1989 - 1993 so you may be right about the O2 sensor though I have never seen one without an O2 sensor. If you have one it will be on the drivers side of the exhaust and please post again if you find out for sure if you do or do not have one (always pays to learn new things). My 1990 318 D-150 has a TBI and it has an O2 sensor and is neither a Cali nor Canadian truck and let me tell you they are a PITA to change.
87 came from the factory without oxygen sensors and your inspection person shoud know that and if they don't then they shoudnt be doin that... anyway I just pulled up rockauto.com on my phone plugged in all my info into their site clickin thru all the info and went to exhaust and then pipe and the third one down was the y pipe without a mini ox converter and he said good enough for me and inspected it
about the codes he isn't my instructor im in HVAC now I don't have electrical anymore I got a different instructor but ill try if he isn't busy anymore... I don't have my truck up here either its at home at the shop for a timing chain, spark control computer, and heads are being rebuilt and shaved .002 so he couldn't show me right now anyway but ill try as soon as I get it back
