Hey Grant,

I need to take some photos this weekend to show you what I am talking about. There is no rod that goes through the steering column on the beast. I have a NP435 4 speed manual, and it will start in gear. The ignition switch is in front of the key switch, so when the key is turned, it also turns the ignition within the column. This is a 1986.

We found the problem, which is an exposed wire on a fuse-able link along the left fender wire. We bypassed the roached fuse-able link by installing a jumper wire with a 25 amp fuse that automatically resets itself (shuts off) if there is too much amperage going through the wire, essentially an eternal fuse.

The truck starts right up and runs well, but I screwed up the wiper on the distributor when I was trying to diagnose the problem. I am installing a new distributor this week if time permits..

Thanks again for all of your help and I can take a few photos and try to upload them if you like. Jake

PS-I think I uploaded a photo of the old girl correctly.

Very sweet truck. I took photos of the steering column, etc. and my iPad is not linking with the iPhone. I will try to send the photos later.

The steering wheel needs to be removed to take off the steering column cover.

Bottom of steering column.

Plug for ignition switch behind the fuse box.

the plug in the third pic: if you follow the wiring to the switch that is bolted to the column you will find the switch I was referring to WITH the rod attached to the top of it.
you got a pic of the side of the column with the turn signal lever on it?

also I see that you have a tan interior... havnt seen many of those around other than mine and a couple guys on facebook.

I realize this is an old thread, but we have a member with a similar problem on his '86 who needs help identifying wires to the steering column.

the ignition switch is in the column (steering wheel needs removed) on a non tilt wheel truck, with tilt it is actuated by a rod and is the square box talked about earlier in thread.
