never seen it happen on the vehicle but seen it before. usually caused by heat. it doesn't mean it is dead but it definitely does not look pretty like that. you might need a heat gun to help you scrape that stuff off the firewall. you can try checking the casing of the ignition module to see if it is grounded properly with a multi meter. the casing needs to be grounded in order for it to run.

nah. i had one do that in the glove box of my 81 once. learned my lesson. store those damn things in a plastic bag while in the glovebox lol. that stuff is only really there to keep the moisture out.
definitely a good idea to keep a spare ballast but i would not replace it as long as you are still seeing power at the coil.

I put on the new ignition module this evening, hit the switch and she fired right up! I can't believe I started with thinking a bad carb, then the intake, then to jump timing and the whole time it was no spark! I swear I saw a spark the first time I tested it but oh well guess my eyesight is going out with my age. Anyways wanted to follow up in case someone else has this problem maybe it can help them. Thank you all that helped me walk through this...glad to have it figured out.
