Recently bought a 1985 w100 with a 318 in it. Has brand new edelbrock 650cfm carburetor on it along with brand new coil, resistor, and distributor. Motor will turn over fine no problem as soon as fuel is pumped to carburetor motor stops turning over or slows down turning over. Its getting sparked and timing has been checked. Lookong for advice thanks

 

the engine should not slow down once fuel starts getting to the carb. something don't see right if that is the case. have you tried using quick start or pouring gas down the intake and then trying to start it?

 

Yes I poured gas directly into carb and turned motor over and right away motor stopped turning over or slowed down to a crawl. Once fuel is taken away from motor turns over like normal.

 

have you tried starting it with the throttle wide open? is there no popping or anything coming from the engine?

 

Yes somtimes there is backfiring through the carb while turning motor over. I had same result holdong throttle open.

 

are you sure you don't have the distributor installed 180* degrees out? it might cause backfiring through the carb.

 

Yes I made sure motor was on tdc with valve cover off and then lined distributor rotor up with cylinder 1.

 

was it the correct TDC tho? it is pretty easy to have it out by 180* and have it look like it is all right

 

Should be on tdc compression stroke I watched cylinder 1 valves open and close and but distributor with both valves closed.

 

have you done a compression check on the engine?
