1988 Ram d250 engine swap help!
So, I have a 1988 dodge Ram D250 with a 360 engine in it, not sure about the transmission. My friend got the truck from a old guy as a payment and wanted to see if I could do anything with it. The old guy for some reason took all the accessories and water pump off, lost the bolts and left the timeing chain exposed. So I decided too pull it and rebuild it. This is my 1st project and engine rebuild I'm going to get into.
My plan is to pull the current 360 engine (which I'm in the process now) and rebuild it over time but, I want to find another running engine as a replacement for the time being. Which is why I need advice. I was wondering what other engine could fit, maybe a newer dodge engine out of a second generation dodge. Basically I want to know what engines will fit in my 88 d250 with ease, I know summit racing sell universal engine mounts that makes swaps easier. I'm a beginner so, all information and ideas are welcome.

727 trans. you could always try firing it up before rebuilding it to see if it is worth rebuilding and maybe see if the trans need work. if your looking at swapping out the engines minus well just look for a 360 magnum. you would have to stick another 360 in it or knock the weight off the torque converter to run any of the other engines.
I think any 360 (LA series) up to 92 would drop right in. They used those engines in just about everything.... but, the age is going to be what bites you. (on the used market.) I doubt I would be able to find one in a yard around here. They are, after all, pushing 30 years old. 93-95 magnum would bolt right in, though there may be some fun with the front engine mounts, and you would need to change to a carb intake, and the older ignition system. 96 and up would also work, but, you would need to use the older flexplate (neutral balance) with your current torque converter.
