Why not take a picture of your engine top from the side? That will refresh my mind as to particulars. As for working on it, I've been known to climb inside and sit on the fender to work on them. On my old '84, I got some brackets made to move the bumper out 6 inches. I put a metal plate behind it and stood on it to work on the engine. It was also handy to mount fog lights.

Vac advance usually runs from ported vacuum. I'd just run a line from where it connects to the carb on the other side of the ported vacuum switch straight to the distributor

Thats what I was thinking, that vac switch at Tstat housing would be a good spot for water temp gauge.
