1992 D350 360 Magnum - HELP!
Hi, I've just gotten my first Dodge, a '92 D350 with the gas V8, and I'm having a few troubles with it and could use a bit of direction in figuring it out. For context, this truck has been sitting for a few years, and I went through the usual checklist before starting it, fluids, cap and rotor, fuel, etc. and was able to start it up with minimal effort. It ran surprisingly well for having old gas in the tank, so I let it idle for a little bit. After learning the hard way that the alternator seized, I shut it down for a few days and came back around to it this morning. After throwing some new belts at it, I went to start it and got nothing but cranking. I gave it a few pumps and then it roared to life at pretty high RPMs, then idled down and then died. It would only run for 2-5 seconds once it fired, and every few times it would backfire through the intake. I'm not familiar with TBI, and so I'm pretty lost when it comes to starting to diag this. I don't think it's spark related seeing as it runs really strong for those few seconds. Any advice would be much appreciated!
TBI is basically a electronic carburetor. If it's back firing I would check the wires are going to the correct cylinders and not crossing with one another. Wouldn't hurt to see what the timing is set at either. The idle motor on these motors fail often. If it won't idle on it's own that's something to check. When it is running look down the throttle body and verify both injectors are firing. If one failed then the motor is only running on one. Check the fuel pressure, If it's not within spec it to could be causing issues.
So I was able to figure out what was going on, turns out fuel pressure was the key. I was lucky enough to have a dump bed on the truck, so I lifted it and pulled the fuel pump and cleaned the filter on the bottom. After that, truck runs great! Already put a few hundred miles on it and it has yet to let me down
