Default 1993 Dodge D150 - Rich White Smoke and Engine Stutter Under Load

Hey! Looking for some advice here. I have a 1993 Dodge D150 with the 318 Magnum. Recently got it running again and struggling to figure out the cause of some smoking and rich condition issues. See symptoms and parts that have been replaced to date.

Symptoms:
  • White smoke at idle - goes away when accelerating
  • Rich smelling smoke
  • Engine stutter after third gear - can accelerate through and it is fine or let off completely and it is fine but if I hold slight gas pressure to maintain, it feels like it’s misfiring
  • Slightly rough idle
  • Gas Mileage Issues
  • Was spraying fuel from the exhaust with smoke, but injectors and fuel pressure regulator fixed this
  • Erratic acceleration up hills

Parts Replaced to Date:
  • EGR Valve - EGR tube is also welded off
  • Intake Plenum Gasket
  • PCV Valve
  • IAC Valve
  • Distributor
  • Spark Plugs and wires
  • Valve Cover Gaskets
  • Fuel Filter
  • Intake Fuel Pressure Regulator

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When you replaced the distributor did you set the fuel sync? What spark plugs are you using? You didn't mention how may miles are on it. Have you done a compression and fuel pressure test?

I had the distributor professionally installed and they did fuel and compression test on it for me. The spark plugs I installed are the champion copper plus. It has 90,000 miles on it.

A couple of things. My 94 Dakota 5.2 smokes of a wet morning, except it clears after several minutes.

I have cracked heads, a leaky plenum, a 160 deg thermostat (which prolly keeps the engine in open loop, longer than it should). Wrong plugs. Still, it passed the smog test the other day. When idling, it smells rich; it idles kinda rough. The smog guy said it might be because the valves are receding into the head, and the engine is staying in open loop.

My trials with the TPS, tried ones from rockauto, e-bay, no good. The one from napa parts was erratic also, when I returned it, the counter guy said, the boss( owner) wants us to just put it back on the shelf? Yeah, pull the other one. The one I’m using now (from crown auto thru Summit) still has problems, flat spots, erratic acceleration. I pull out from the stop sign, and I punch it, and sometimes it pops thru the intake, and the engine acts as if it dies(It doesn't). I can lift just a hair, and it’s like Wow, hit the brakes, I’m doing 55mph in a 25 zone. Well, sometimes it’s not that bad.

Save your original electronic parts, they might work better than the ones that you just changed.

There is a way to check for proper TPS operation, except every time I try it, I screw it up.

What were the compression check results?
This my tailpipe.

Not much oiliness, just more soot than it should be.
