I guess I should mention, for those that don't know, this truck comes with a Throttle Body Injection (TBI) system. It's fuel injected, so there's not a float. It sure feels like I've got some spark problem because once in awhile it will hesitate while driving under a load. The engine has a hell of a lot of power since I replaced the fuel pump, but now I'm kinda sciddish to take it a long ways from home. I know it will eventually start, but I'd hate to spend the night. Thank God for Triple A!
Also, I replaced all the sensors prior to the fuel pump. Of course, they could always go bad. Thanks, but keep that thinking cap on.

hey i have an 89 D150 R/T. I have temperature problems but only when it's been running for a while it loses power and totally bogs out. i changed the whole cooling system. im thinking its the catylitic converter but im not sure. Just looking for a second opinion. Also i've never seen or heard of another D150 R/T. Its got stock holly throttle body. im thinking this truck might be rare. let me know!

Check your Coil! It might not be working properly. Have you replaced the fuel filter?

Well, It's been awhile since I posted to this. I replaced the fuel pump and the truck ran like a champ. It still does when it wants to start. For some reason, when I get it started, it will run great for a while and then it just cuts out completely. It won't start for a long time or I'll have to mess with it. I've found that if I disconnect the battery and connect it again after a few tries, it will start again. I've played with the idea of hydro lock, but after replacing the gas cap, it still does this. I was told it could be a problem in the auto tranny because it happens "at times" while I'm slowing down. But it also happens on the highway crusing. It just cuts out. If I'm lucky, while I'm coasting, I crank and it starts. If not, I have to pull over and kick the truck a few times mess with what ever I can get my hands on and it will start. I'm afraid that it won't start one of these days or I'll stall at a light. It's hard to push that big truck when you're by yourself!

I just got done working on a VW cabrio with the exact same prob. It was the ignition switch! Same thing after it warmed up it would just die now and then. And it would start when cold but not when hot. I thought the pcm was bad, but changed the switch for the hell of it first. So maybe it's your ignition switch. If not I would lean towards the pcm.

And BTW what brand fuel pump did you buy and from where?

Thanks! I'll check into the ignition switch. I hate to say it, but I bought the pump from Autozone! I know it's a cheapy, but it's got a life time warranty! Although it's a pain to replace it as I either have to drop the tank, or pull the bed. Thanks again! I'll keep you informed.

I had the same problem with my headlights,I replaced the dimmer switch near the bottom of the column and it has not had a problem since.
When the truck dies or will not start, turn the key off for a second then back on and listen for the fuel pump,if you hear the pump run, check for fuel flow at the injectors, then check for spark at the plug.

Sounds like the magnetic pickup coil in the distributor. They can get hot and cause the engine to shut off. Once it cools for a minute it will start back.

Ok, it's been resolved finally!!! It turned out to be the pickup coil in the distributor and the distributor itself. It was very rusty! Anyway, since that's been fixed, I need to time it. Any help on this would be great. The manual states to use a timing light and point it to the hole in the bellhousing. Is there only one bellhousing on this truck? The one that incases the torque converter? Or is there another type of bellhousing that has something to do with the timing marks? If it is the tranny bellhousing, where's the freakin hole??? Thanks in advance for the help!!!
