Default Need help with carb trouble.

The 1796 318 W200 Pickup I just got has some carb problems. First off, I think the carb is a Carter 4894 or a 2207, I can't tell which of these numbers is the correct model number. The 4894 is stamped on a small piece of brass that is screwed into the top of the carb, the 2207 is cast into the carb body on the passenger side. This carb has been messed with alot, the person who owned the truck before me hooked up the throttle cable, but there is no spring on the carb to pull the throttle cable into it's original position. Also, the owner before me put a manual choke on, just a wire with a pull switch in the truck that doesn't work for squat. I am wondering if I should just try to find a new carb to replace this one? Or should I get the OEM carb for the truck, which I cannot find anywhere?

I'd check into a new carb, springs and all that, should come with an auto choke.

But I thought they didn't start making automobiles until 1900?
